Man Management

The Teenage Prodigy

Perhaps the biggest criticism of Berhalter has been his man management. This is most evident in his handling of Giovanni Reyna. Son of former USMNT captain Claudio Reyna, Gio was the brightest American prospect in European football and earmarked to be one of the USMNT’s star players. At just 17 years of age he was already starting Champions League games for Borussia Dortmund and playing a pivotal role for one of the best European clubs in world soccer. He made his USMNT debut right before his 18th birthday against Wales, with his early inclusion in the national team setup highlighting the expectations placed on him. Over the next few years he continued to grow in both quality and importance to the team.

The expectations for Reyna’s involvement in the national team for the World Cup were sky high. As one of the few players with European pedigree, he would surely be an essential part of the team if they were to make it deep into the tournament. By age 20 he had already made over 100 appearances for Dortmund. He had already shown he could help his team in high stakes matches, as seen with his goals and assists in high stake matches against teams such as PSG (in the Champions League), Werder Bremen (in the DFB Pokal), and Mexico (in the Nations League).

His ability to influence games at the highest level made his limited playing time at the World Cup a surprising and confusing decision by Berhalter.

World Cup Aftermath

Reyna’s lack of playtime was no longer an issue as the team had crashed out of the tournament. However, Berhalter decided to take an interview on the way back from the World Cup in which he indirectly called Reyna out. Berhalter said there was a player clearly not meeting expectations on and off the field. He had a conversation with the staff about sending the player home early, but ultimately decided to have a conversation with the player instead. The player was asked to apologize to the rest of the team and explain what he had done wrong. According to Berhalter, after apologizing the players stood up one by one and told him that he hadn’t been meeting their expectations, and wanted to see him change. Hours after the interview, The Athletic published a story detailing how Reyna had “shown an alarming lack of effort in training ahead of the US’s opening match.” None of this was public knowledge during the World Cup.

Reyna responded on Instagram, upset the dispute had been made public. He stated that Berhalter told him before the tournament that he would have a limited role, which left him devastated. He let his emotions get the best of him and affect his training and behavior for a few days. He apologized to his teammates and coach for this, and was told he was forgiven. He then shook off his disappointment and gave everything he had on and off the field. He says he was disappointed there is continued coverage of the issue, and surprised that anyone on the USMNT’s staff would contribute to it, as Berhalter himself always said that issues within the team should be dealt with “in house.” Shortly after, everything happening behind the scenes comes to light.

In response to the coach’s comments about her son, Danielle Reyna spoke to US Soccer sporting director Earnie Stewart about a past domestic violence incident involving Berhalter. She said in a statement that she felt it was unfair to Gio, who had apologized for his actions, to continue to be dragged through the mud when Gregg had “asked for and received forgiveness for doing something so much worse at the same age.” There were also reports that Claudio Reyna, Gio’s father, had been sending messages to USMNT general manager Brian McBride and Earnie Stewart during the World Cup complaining about his son’s lack of playing time, as well as threatening to share the allegations about Berhalter’s past. Claudio denied those allegations.

Shortly after all this, Berhalter creates a twitter account and  confesses to assaulting his wife. He goes into detail on what transpired, how it was dealt with, and what they learned from it. He says that it was a learning opportunity from him and that he chose of his own volition to improve as a person. In the statement he says "The intention of this statement is to provide transparency and to reinforce that a single bad decision made by a teenager does not necessarily define him for the rest of his life." This could obviously either be talking about himself, Reyna, or both of them.

In Reyna's first game back for Dortmund from the World Cup, he scored the winner in stunning fashion. He then celebrates by plugging his ears followed by making a yapping hand sign. The celebration is clearly targeted at Berhalter, adding further fuel to the already huge fire. Fans of the USMNT begin taking sides, as many people criticized and mocked Berhalter's decision to play Jordan Morris retrospectively whenever Reyna was mentioned.

At this point, Berhalter's contract has run out. As he was under investigation there was no rush to re-sign him as head coach of the USMNT. Anthony Hudson, who was an assistant coach at the time, took over as interim head coach to ensure the team remained focused and prepared during this transitional phase.

The investigation, conducted by U.S. Soccer, spanned nearly two months, concluding in late February 2023. This comprehensive review aimed to gather all relevant facts and assess Berhalter’s behavior and leadership. Despite the public scrutiny and the complexities involved, the findings ultimately supported Berhalter’s reinstatement, which was announced in early March 2023. His candidness about his past actions and his proactive measures to address them played a significant role in the decision to allow him to resume his role. This outcome was very polarizing amongst USMNT fans, and continues to be hotly debated. There was no mention publicly of Berhalter or Reyna reconciling until March 2024, where Reyna said the situation was "in the past."
