Can Berhalter rise to the occasion?

Looking
Forward:

The USMNT heads into Copa America 2024 with a mix of cautious optimism and lingering doubts. The build-up has really been exciting to see and we're only a month away from the tournament. While their recent performances offer reasons for hope, the true test lies in facing the elite South American competition. From our own debates and listing to others, here's a breakdown of what the world expects:

Promising results:

The USMNT dominated the 2023 Gold Cup, defeating Mexico 3-2 in a thrilling final. Weston McKennie's headed an impressive goal after a pinpoint cross from Pulisic.

Berhalter's squad secured back-to-back Nations League titles with a convincing 2-0 victory over Costa Rica. This win solidified their dominance in CONCACAF, but questions remain about their ability to translate this success against much, much tougher opponents.

According to some, there are more reasons to be optimistic than pessimistic. "They are playing with a lot of confidence," said ESPN analyst Alexi Lalas. "They're young, they're hungry, and they're starting to believe in themselves."

Trouble on the horizon:

A disappointing 1-0 loss to Germany and a narrow 2-1 victory over a youthful Czech Republic squad exposed some limitations. Critics pointed to Berhalter's conservative tactics, particularly in the Germany game, where Pulisic was left isolated upfront.

On the other hand, some people have their reservations: "We need to see more attacking creativity," said supporter group leader Sarah Walsh. "Berhalter has to find a way to unlock the full potential of this team, especially against top South American sides."

The upcoming Copa America will be a significant test for the USMNT. Their performance against Uruguay, a potential group-stage opponent, will be particularly telling.

Uruguay boasts a world-class defense marshaled by veterans Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez. Can the USMNT's young attack, led by Pulisic and Reyna, find a way to penetrate this defensive wall?

Can Berhalter dominate south america?

Verdict:

Berhalter must prove himself in COPA america, or he may be out before the world cup.
